Thomas E. Murphy, CFP®, AIF®Chief Executive Officer
Thomas E. Murphy Chief Executive Officer
Since 1988, Tom Murphy has specialized in helping business owners, corporate executives, military veterans and high net worth individuals create, preserve and transfer their wealth. Tom designs innovative business continuity plans, asset protection plans and tax-favored wealth accumulation and transfer strategies.
Tom holds a master’s degree in financial services and has earned the following designations: CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®) professional, Accredited Investment Fiduciary® (AIF®), Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU®), Chartered Financial Consultant® (ChFC®), Accredited Estate Planner® (AEP®), Certified Family Business Specialist (CFBS), Certification for Long-Term Care (CLTC®), Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA) and Special Care Planner.
Additionally, Tom is a licensed insurance counselor and is a member of various industry organizations, including the Financial Planning Association (FPA) and the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils (NAEPC).
A Dallas native, Tom graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point and served 5 ½ years in the Military Intelligence Corps. He and his wife, Ciel, have been married for more than 30 years and have two children, Katharine and Thayer.

Susan Sylvest Chief Investment Officer & Founding Partner
Susan Sylvest has more than 25 years’ experience in wealth management specializing in assisting women, corporate executives and working professionals. Her experience includes asset allocation and investment advising for high net worth individuals through private client portfolios, as well as with two leading private banks, Frost Bank and Trust and Northern Trust Bank.
After relocating to Dallas from Boise, Idaho, Susan began in the Dallas office of Merrill Lynch as a financial advisor. She also has served as senior investment consultant with Banc One Investment Advisors and as vice president of investments and sales management for Fisher Investments, Inc. Before joining Murphy & Sylvest in early 2007, Susan was senior vice president of client services with a private wealth advisory firm, specializing in institutional asset allocation analysis for individuals of affluence as well as for families, corporations and institutions.
Susan holds a degree in economics from Indiana University and has earned the Accredited Investment Fiduciary® (AIF®) designation. She has passed the FINRA Series 65 securities exam and is a licensed Texas life and health insurance provider. In addition, she has completed all coursework for the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional designation.
Susan is the mother of four daughters and five stepchildren and is active in community organizations where she shares her time as well as financial expertise. She has served on the financial committee of the Dallas Women’s Foundation (now known as the Texas Women’s Foundation), the board of directors for the Dallas Children’s Theater, Senior Source, TACA and Junior Players.

Paul has been in the investment field since 1986, starting as an independent RIA before moving to National City and Bank One. At those banks, he was a lead portfolio manager in charge of portfolio managers of various regions of the Bank’s footprint. While at Bank One, Paul not only was responsible for the private client group in Texas and Oklahoma, but also worked with the research group in putting together the investment models used by the entire bank.
After leaving Bank One, Paul returned to the RIA business and began working with various boutique investment firms, most recently Kingsview Asset Management in Chicago. As Sr. VP and member of their investment committee he was responsible for both proprietary investment products within the firm and reviews investments for their advisory staff.
He is a frequent contributor to Bloomberg, WBBM & WGN radio stations as well as quoted in the Chicago Tribune, Barron’s, Reuters, Marketwatch or TheStreet.com.

Donald J. LaGrange (Donnie) joined the Financial Services industry after retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army. Totaling nearly 22 years, his service included 6 years overseas. He led organizations as large as 2600 and served as the 2-Star level Protection program manager for Fort Carson and Atlantic Resolve, protecting our community domestically and planning for the protection of potential future basing in eastern Europe. His business credentials include the Project Management Professional (PMP) and Six Sigma (SSGB).
Donnie holds a B.S. in Economics from The United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point, an M.Ed. in Educational Psychology (counseling) with a focus in adult development, and served 3 years teaching psychology as a rotating faculty member at USMA. He brings a rare blend of financial and human performance optimization to his advisory work.

Elizabeth (Liz) joined the financial services industry in 2020 after a 10-year career with Enterprise Holdings. Throughout her time at Enterprise Holdings, Liz pioneered The Exotic Car Collection, overseeing the purchase and sale of vehicles, the profits and losses of the division, and expanding to three locations throughout the DFW Metroplex.
In the fall of 2020, Liz made the shift into financial services and worked with Ameriprise Financial Services, following her passion for helping people achieve their financial goals. Liz currently holds her FINRA Series 7, Series 66 and Life and Health insurance licenses.
Liz joined Murphy & Sylvest in January 2022. She believes the best way to service clients is through objective, unbiased advice. Liz focuses on helping individuals and families evaluate their present financial situation, refine their financial goals, and develop a plan to achieve those goals.
Liz is originally from Tampa, Florida and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, and a minor in Spanish from Southern Methodist University in Dallas. In her free time, Liz serves as the Vice President for For the Love of the Lake, a nonprofit organization that focuses on keeping White Rock Lake clean for Dallas residents, and is the Treasurer for the Plano Chamber of Commerce Women's Division. Liz enjoys traveling and spending time with friends and family.

Scott Long is a lifelong learner of personal finance, financial markets, and retirement planning. He transitioned into the financial services industry - via Fidelity Investments, after completing an unparalleled 16-year career in MRO supply with Lawson Products. Feeling grateful for the financial and retirement planning success he and his family had, as well as the opportunities to work with great mentors along the way, Scott was inspired to change industries and pay it forward to others. Scott joined Murphy & Sylvest to give his network the customized, client-centric experience each one of them deserve; something which will always stay in focus. Â
Scott is a graduate of the University of Iowa, and he holds a FINRA Series 7 license & FINRA Series 66 license. He is most proud of being a father and husband, as well as his volunteer board of directors position with Foster Progress: a nonprofit organization helping make the college dream come true for youth whom have experienced foster care. You may also run into Scottie Long at one of his live music performances, singing & playing guitar. Â

Sam joined Murphy & Sylvest after graduating from Lamar University and holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with an emphasis in Financial Management. Sam was a NCAA division one athlete and graduated Summa Cum Laude while serving as Treasurer and President of Media for Lamar University’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
Sam is driven by a commitment to working with individuals and families who are passionate about curating experiences with their loved ones, creating legacies for their families, and passing down values and traditions to other generations, while ensuring that money is never a hindrance to them accomplishing their goals. She currently holds a FINRA Series 65 Investment Advisor License, and is an exam candidate for the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) exam.
Sam is originally from Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho where she spent her time hiking, at the lake, and golfing the beautiful courses North Idaho has to offer. In her free time, she enjoys coaching volleyball, being outdoors, and spending time with friends and family.Â
Cathy CaddellChief of Operations
Cathy Caddell Chief of Operations
Cathy Caddell is the Chief of Operations for Murphy & Sylvest. Cathy’s role is to support the financial planning process through research, maintenance of client accounts, managing client deliverables and coordinating preparation for client meetings. She is also responsible for redesigning our organizational processes in order to continually improve the exceptional level of service we provide our clients.
An engineering graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Cathy joined Murphy & Sylvest in October 2011. She previously served 22 years as a Military Police Officer in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserve.
She moved to the Dallas area when her husband, Lyle, retired from the Army with their three children, Kevin, Jeff and Ruthie. She enjoys spending time with her family at various kids’ sporting events and volunteering in support of Lakepointe Church and its numerous missions and projects.

Debbie Butt Director of Administration
Debbie serves as an assistant for Murphy & Sylvest. She applies her penchant for detail and focus on client care while interacting office-wide with members of our team. Debbie arranges and confirms appointments, updates calendars and maintains files as part of her daily course of work. Routinely, she prepares general correspondence while greeting guests and facilitating company initiatives.
Debbie accepted the opportunity to work at Murphy & Sylvest in February 2012 after starting her office career in a similar position with a Fortune 500 company in the Midwest. She most recently worked as a substitute teacher at a DFW Exemplary Elementary School.
Debbie spends her free time with her friends and family (Labrador included). She enjoys long family vacations back home in Indiana, gardening, decorating and watching her children in their various sporting activities.

Misti White Paraplanner
Misti joined Murphy & Sylvest full-time in January 2023. Before joining full-time, Misti worked as a part-time financial planning intern at Murphy & Sylvest assisting advisors with client services and other tasks. She is currently studying for her FINRA Series 65 Investment Advisor License.
Misti is a recent college graduate from The University of North Texas with a bachelor’s degree in Financial Planning. Throughout her academic journey, she developed a strong passion for helping individuals and families secure their financial futures and lifelong dreams. With attention to detail and a deep understanding of financial principles, she works alongside advisors to guide clients on the path to reaching and achieving their specific goals.
Misti enjoys spending quality time with her family and friends and making memories along the way. She also enjoys traveling and playing volleyball in her free time.
